What about Microfibres?
All synthetic fabrics shed tiny pieces of plastic called microfibres in the wash even our lovely activewear and so although we are doing everything we can to help save our seas, we recommend washing all of your synthetics in a washing bag or filter. We don't yet sell these unfortunately but hope to when we grow and in the meantime check out whats available out there with a quick search online.
How do you turn ocean waste into fabrics and activewear?
Roughly 10% of the estimated 14 billion pounds of waste discarded in the ocean every year is made up of abandoned, lost, or discarded fishing gear. Pretty horrific stuff and this is effecting waters globally. We make our timeless pieces with regenerated nylon, a fiber made from recycled fishing nets and other waste that would otherwise be discarded into oceans and landfills to help our seas recover from this ever increasing issue. By using this recycled material, we help clean our oceans, recycle that waste, and cut out the need for raw materials like crude oil, which are traditionally used in the production of nylon.
What about your shipping?
The transportation sector is a major contributor to carbon dioxide levels and it is essential for all business to reduce this as much as possible if we want to help our ecosystem and planet survive. We work with a courier and pay a little extra for carbon neutral shipping however we know although it's a good start it isn't perfect so we also plant a tree when orders are placed with us to help combat our carbon footprint.
As technologies progress here or we grow big enough to tackle them ourselves we will be first in line but in the meantime we highly advise you pressing this importance wherever you shop to ensure the demand is there to make change.
We have designed our products to last for a long time, we use fabrics that are durable and reliable and premium manufacturing but to ensure your products have a long life they need to be cared for properly.
We are really excited to partner with smol. smol make high-performance laundry capsules that are available via subscription so that you never run out!
Their laundry capsules come in plastic-free packaging and fit through your letterbox. We recommend using smol on your SOS Activewear clothing.
To make your SOS Activewear clothing last longer smol recommends:
- Using non-bio detergent where possible and washing at lower temperatures
- Do not use detergents or laundry products containing any sort of bleaching agents. smol is free of bleaching agents.
- Choosing a liquid detergent over a powder one can quadruple the life of your clothes.
-Avoid over-using laundry detergent as this can damage the fibres. smol laundry capsules are perfectly pre-measured so you can be confident that you are always using the right amount of detergent.
- We recommend 1 capsule per wash for a standard load (5-6kg) and 2 capsules per wash for larger washing machines (8kg+)
- Avoid using fabric softeners or conditioners
